The Shreveport estimates sit at or a bit above the national guides for medium and large trees. Treat every number on this page as a starting point for budgeting. The only price that counts is a written quote from a crew that has seen the tree.
What makes a tree removal cost more
- Height and trunk size. Bigger trees take longer and need more rigging. HomeGuide notes that trunks over 24 inches across cost significantly more.
- What's under it. A tree over a roof, fence, or power line has to be taken down in pieces. Angi says tight, hard-to-reach, or unsafe spots typically add 25% to 50%.
- A crane. Angi puts crane service at about $500 extra, or $250–$600 a day, with very difficult removals going much higher.
- Condition. Dead or decayed trees can cost more, not less, because brittle wood breaks unpredictably (HomeGuide).
- Urgency. PermitDeck says emergency work typically costs 50–100% more in Shreveport. HomeGuide says same-day or next-day removal often runs 2 to 3 times the normal rate. After a big storm, demand is highest and crews are booked.
- Season. HomeGuide reports prices 10–20% higher in summer and fall, when demand peaks, and lower in winter and early spring.
- What's included. Stump grinding, hauling, and chipping are often priced separately. Angi lists hauling at about $70 and chipping at about $95.
Is the stump included?
Often not. Ask. In Shreveport, PermitDeck estimates $215–$364 to grind an 18-inch stump. If you plan to leave debris for city pickup, note that Shreveport's bulky pickup does not take stumps or roots, and it won't collect debris generated by a contractor (City of Shreveport, Bulky Item Pickup).
Doing part of the cleanup yourself
If you cut and haul some brush yourself, you can save on cleanup charges, as long as you follow city rules:
- Shreveport: limbs and brush must be no more than 8 inches in diameter or 6 feet long, one pile per request (no larger than 15 × 6 × 6 feet). Request pickup by calling Public Works at 318-673-6300 or through the city's Report A Concern page (source).
- Bossier City: limbs no longer than 6 feet, no wider than 8 inches, and no heavier than 65 pounds each, stacked neatly at the curb, up to a stack 15 feet long by 4 feet high. Call the Solid Waste office ahead for large amounts; extra fees may apply (Bossier City, Yard Waste).
Will homeowners insurance pay for it?
Sometimes. According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, when a tree falls and damages your insured house, your company will usually pay to remove the tree as well as repair the damage. If a tree simply falls in your yard without hitting a covered structure, coverage depends on your policy; some policies cover removal if the tree blocks your driveway. Insurance rarely pays to remove a healthy standing tree before it falls (HomeGuide).
If someone else's tree is involved, see who pays when a neighbor's tree falls in Louisiana.
Do you need a permit in Shreveport?
For trees in the street right-of-way or on other public ground, yes, the city has rules: Shreveport's Unified Development Code, Article 10, covers tree planting, maintenance, and removal on street rights-of-way and public grounds. If the tree stands between the sidewalk and the street, call Shreveport Public Works (318-673-6300) before anyone cuts. For other situations, ask your tree service; a Louisiana-licensed arborist should know the local rules.
How to get a fair quote
- Get at least three written quotes. Both Angi and the Louisiana Department of Insurance recommend comparing at least three.
- Ask exactly what's included: felling, limb removal, stump grinding, hauling, chipping, and cleanup.
- Check the license. Louisiana requires anyone who removes or trims trees for a fee to hold an Arborist License from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF). Licensed arborists must give you a written contract stating the work and the price, and the LDAF publishes a list of licensed arborists (LDAF arborist licensing; LDAF licensed professionals).
- Ask for a certificate of insurance (general liability and, if they have employees, workers' comp).
- Be wary of anyone who wants full payment up front, especially after a storm.
