Tree down after a storm? Do this first
- Get everyone away from the tree. Fallen trees can settle and keep moving. Call 911 if anyone is hurt, there's a fire, or you smell gas.
- Treat every downed wire as live. Report a tree on a power line to your utility: SWEPCO 888-218-3919 or Entergy Louisiana 1-800-968-8243 (both 24 hours).
- Photograph the damage, then call your insurance company before signing any contract.

Read the storm guide →My neighbor's tree fell on my house. Who pays?
In Louisiana, your own insurance usually pays if the tree was healthy. Your neighbor may be liable if it was dead or rotten and they should have known. Here's what the law and the state say.

Before you hire any tree service in Louisiana
- Check the license. Louisiana requires anyone who removes or trims trees for a fee to hold an Arborist License from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF). The LDAF publishes a list of licensed arborists. Work on trees along utility rights-of-way needs a separate Utility Arborist License (LDAF).
- Get it in writing. LDAF requires licensed arborists to give property owners a written contract stating the work to be done and the price.
- Ask for proof of insurance. The Louisiana Department of Insurance advises not hiring any contractor who can't show it, and asking for the certificate to come straight from their insurer (LDI Post-Disaster Guide).
- Compare at least three quotes, and ask whether stump grinding, hauling and cleanup are included.
- Don't pay in full up front, and be wary of anyone who says your insurance company sent them (LDI).
City rules for tree limbs and debris
Shreveport
Bulky pickup takes limbs and brush no more than 8 inches across or 6 feet long, one pile per request (up to 15 × 6 × 6 feet). It doesn't take stumps or roots, or debris left by a contractor. Request pickup through Public Works at 318-673-6300 or the city's Report A Concern page (City of Shreveport).
Bossier City
Cut limbs to no more than 6 feet long, 8 inches across and 65 pounds each, and stack them neatly at the curb (up to 15 feet long by 4 feet high). Call the Solid Waste office ahead for large amounts; fees may apply (City of Bossier City).
Trees near power lines
Never trim or cut a tree that touches or overhangs a power line yourself. SWEPCO trims and removes trees that grow too close to the lines running pole to pole, and you can ask for an inspection with its Report Tree Problem form. The line from the pole to your house (the service drop) is the property owner's responsibility. SWEPCO asks you to call 888-216-3523 at least two business days before scheduled tree work so it can temporarily disconnect that line.
